CEED Revolutionizes Union Representation for Workers in the Cannabis Industry
In recent years, the legalization of cannabis for both medicinal and adult use in many states has created a dire need for quality representation for workers employed in this rapidly growing industry. Recognizing this urgent need, the International Union of Journeymen and Allied Trades (IUJAT) has established a specialized division called CEED – Cannabis Engineers, Extractors, and Distributors, dedicated exclusively to championing the rights and interests of workers in this burgeoning field.
The economic potential of the cannabis industry cannot be understated. With billions of dollars projected to be generated and significant tax revenue for the states, it is essential that workers in this industry receive their fair share and are not left behind. Unfortunately, traditional labor movements often focus exclusively on long-established industries, paying little attention to emerging sectors. This will not be the case with the IUJAT and CEED, as we vow to keep a watchful eye on the cannabis industry to prevent it from becoming another Walmart-like low-paying job market.
Though CEED is a relatively new division, our determination and commitment to advocating for workers’ rights are unwavering. As evidence of our progress, CEED remains actively engaged in organizing efforts and negotiating collective bargaining agreements in our jurisdiction. Notably, a recent victory came as CEED met with the workers employed at a grow and cultivation facility tucked away in the hills of Pennsylvania.
Through a card check recognition and NLRB petition process, workers at Terrascend proudly became members of CEED, IUJAT.
The immediate next step for CEED was to demand negotiations, and we successfully negotiated and ratified our first Collective Bargaining Agreement at the aforementioned facility. This landmark agreement signifies a significant achievement for our members as it secures substantial economic gains in terms of wages and benefits. Moreover, our members now possess a powerful voice in the workplace and a say in shaping their own future.
The IUJAT and CEED are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our newest members and celebrate this important milestone. As Guy James, the International Director of Cannabis within IUJAT, aptly stated, “Whenever you can make a difference and better the lives of working people, it’s like winning the lottery.”
With CEED at the forefront, tirelessly advocating for the rights and wellbeing of workers in the cannabis industry, we are confident in our ability to shape a fair and prosperous future for all.
